Having owned the Bronco for over 10 years and
never had to replace the power steering pump, the time has come.
With the years of regular use, and more and more off-road abuse, it is
finally starting to show signs of failure. Along
with the usual
wining that the Ford pumps produce, I am now having intermittent loss
of
use while pulling out of my driveway, and it only gets worse when I'm
four-wheeling.
After doing some
research, I have decided that the Saginaw swap is the
easiest
and cheapest.
The basics
of this swap are:
Saginaw p/s pump (any one will do)
Saginaw p/s pump housing bracket (off Ford van)
Saginaw p/s pump bracket (off Ford van)
spacer on top bolt of Saginaw pump (between head and pump)
hi pressure p/s hose (off Ford van)
p/s pump pulley (off Ford van)
p/s belt (off Ford van)
Here are the
parts I ended up using:
Saginaw p/s pump (1985 ish Ford van)
Saginaw p/s pump housing bracket (1985 ish Ford van)
my stock p/s bracket
spacer (made my own from some stock lying around)
hi pressure p/s hose (1985 ish Ford van)
p/s pump pulley (off one of my many donor pumps)
p/s belt (stock Bronco one)
Note: I used the pulley that was on one of my donor pumps. It was
5 7/8", where
my stock one was 5 3/8". So far this doesn't seem to be an issue.
I have read of people having to use a shorter belt, notching the
bracket, use the Bronco pressure hose and so on, so obviously there are
a lot of difference's
amongst the years, so you may have to change all, or just some of the
above parts.
