Starter Upgrade

The stock starters are ok, but they draw a lot of power and tend to work intermittently when you really need them. A common updgrade is to get a PMGR
(permanent magnet gear reduction) starter from a newer (1992-1996) Bronco or F-Series, with the same transmission as your own (auto or manual). It is a
direct bolt in, and you just need to relocate the original starter power wire to the "hot" side of the factory starter solenoid, and run a new "trigger" wire from
the new starter solenoid to the "crank" side of the factory starter solenoid. Here is how I did it.....

Disconnect the battery.

Remove the starter wire from the starter solenoid.

Put the starter wire on the hot side of the solenoid.

PMGR starter (used) on the left, and the original starter on the right.

This might have been the cause of some of my problems.

New starter on the bench, new trigger wire attached to the solenoid.

I use this stuff to seal all my electrical connections.

New starter in place with the two wires hooked up.

I used cable ties and ran the trigger wire alongside of the original starter wire.

Original solenoid all done and connections sealed.

Shows the trigger wire tied to the starter wire.

Battery hooked up and connection sealed.

Here are few short video clips so we can hear the difference in the the starters....

PMGR Starter, No Coil Wire.

PMGR Starter, w/Coil Wire.
