Alarm Headlamp Flash

November 16, 2010

When installing HID headlights, it is recommended that you disable the "headlight flash" on the factory alarm, as the ballasts' for the HID's
don't like the quick pulsing. This can be done by removing the MALL PGM fuse and cycling through the factory alarm options (see owners
manual). The downside to this is that you also disable the parklights from flashing, thus you have no visual sign that the arm/disarm is
working.  I've always had my parklights flash with my alarms, but after installing my HID's, I disabled the light flash the factory way, and
after 24 hours I was already missing my light flash.

Thanks to "oakleafresin" on the ClubGP forum, I found an easy way to disable the headlight flash for the alarm, and an added bonus (for me)
is that you also disable the auto-on headlights. Also known as "twilight" or "sentinel" lights, this feature turns the headlights and parklights on
when the photo-resistor in the dash detects that it is dark. I don't like this feature as my lights go on and off when they really don't need to.

All you need to do is cut the yellow wire (pin F, headlight switch signal) at the DRL module. You can simply cut the wire, or the
better way is to remove plug C1 from the DRL module, remove the plastic retainer that holds the pins in place and remove the wire
from the plug. Make sure you tape the yellow wire, as it may see voltage when the headlights are turned on manually.

And that is it!

Now only the parklights will flash with the factory alarm, and only the parklights will come on when the twilight system thinks it is dark.

Another method of bypassing the DRL/AUTO light circuit:

1
 unplug the DRL diode

2
 remove the DRL fuse (*)

3
unplug DRL Control Module (under dash)
(*) with the DRL diode unplugged and the fuse removed , the "auto on" part of my lights stops working.
I believe this happens on the 2000-2003 cars, where 1997-1999 you can
leave the DRL diode plugged in and pull the fuse to disable the DRL's
