HVAC Controller
November

Used HVAC controller.
Original HVAC controller; burnt out lighting.
New controller installed.
A week later, my drive to work was colder than normal;
the right side (of the dual climate control) was cold. It would
randomly go to heat, then cold, then heat etc. I did some
research and a common problem is the heat actuator (there is a left and
a right). I wasn't convinced and found a few video's online and one
mentioned the controller. So, the next
day on my drive to work, I waited for the heat to stop. When it did, I
wiggled and moved the right heat lever, and I had heat. The wiggling
trick only lasted a few days. It now switches
from hot to cold on its own leaving me with no control at all.

Control Actuators: System Type
|
Smart Head, Smart Actuator. This
type of system has a logic circuit in both the control head and the
actuator. The control head outputs a voltage representing the desired
door position. The actuator contains a logic circuit that interprets
that voltage and powers the motor to move the door to the corresponding
position. The GM C-67 system found in W-body cars uses this design. |

Breaking down the controller.

Controller #2. Got this for cheap as it was a "new return".
Installed it, and the "A/C" button didn't work at all, so I returned it.
I re-installed my original controller. It now has no lights other than
the ones in the "A/C"
and "DEFROST" switches, and the left temperature slider only made heat,
no cold.

Controller #3. Brand new.
Everything works as it should. Finally!

A few months ago, I noticed that the dash vents were always moving some
air. Then I realized that when using the A/C, it was so inefficient due
to this problem,
that I had to put the fan on 4 or 5 to cool the car down. I've never
used higher than 3. I thought maybe one of the actuators was faulty,
but after some
internet research, the issue of vacuum came up. After learning this, I
took a look under the hood and saw that the vacuum hose for the HVAC
had 2 cracks
in it, right by the underhood fuse block. I didn't have any vacuum hose
that size (the hose on the car is 1/8" od, 3/16" id). So, I used some
shrink tube to do
a quick fix. The dash vents no longer push air in my face all the time.
Props to
justanswer.com for steering me in this direction.
