Fog Lights

July 7/2019

DRL wiring schematic

Looks like the fog lights are grounded through the headlight switch, so when you switch from low to high beam, low grounds the fogs but high doesn't.

Ever notice how the fog lights only come on when the low beams are on? This is a common practice with vehicle makers. Here is a simple mod I saw
posted on Mazdas247 on how to make your fog lights work (with ignition power) even when the low beams aren't on.

Mod v1.0 (post #1)
tapping into the heated seat circuit to get an "igntion on" 12v source

Mod v2.0 (post #10)
Mod v2.0 (post#36)
tapping into the parking light circuit to get a "parking light on" 12v source

Fog lights on without low beams.

I chose to tap into the heated seat circuit. I cut the wires, crimped things back together and sealed the connections up with shrink-tube and electrical tape.

Remove the cover for relay box.

Remove the wire tab and the 10mm mounting bolt.

Remove the mounting bracket.

Pry off the bottom cover.

The two smaller relays are the one's we are working on.

Cut the red/green wire for the fog lights, and the pink wire for the seats.
The red/green wire from the harness can be bent back and taped off.
Attach the red/green wire coming from the relay to the pink wire.

About a month ago I noticed the fog lights were flickering; turning off an on randomly, and not turning on when I wanted them to. I figured my poor wiring
job failed, so I re-did everything and soldered all the connections. I then wiggled the wires a bit and the lights still flickered; turns out the pin for the fog light
relay wasn't making good contact with the relay, so I crimped it a bit tighter and all is good again.

Around two months ago, the fog lights started working here and there, then stopped working all together. After some diagnosing, I found thst the relay was the problem.

The new relay, BWD #R6310.

The fog lights are grounded thru the hgih beam circuit, so they turn off when the high beams are turned on.

The goal here is to ground the fog lights on their own, and make it plug-n-play.

Took some spare parts and some left-over wire and came up with this.

Hot glue to seal everthing up.

Taped, loomed and ready for install.

Did a temporary install on the left side to make sure things work the way they should, and they did..
